T H E  S T O R Y

Part One:
    And it all began with...

Yusuke Urameshi, who died suddenly while trying to save a boy from getting hit by a raging car. He didn't expect to have a meeting with Death so soon, and when he got the option to live or die, he chose to think about it first before undergoing such processes. He wandered carelessly, and after seeing  how his mother, Atsuko Urameshi, his archenemy, Kazuma Kuwabara and his childhood friend, Keiko Yukimura react to his death, he decided to go back to living.

Part Two:
   The first mission: To retrieve the treasures of Reikai

After restoring him back to life, Koenma Daioh, Prince of Reikai, gave him the job as a Reikai Tantei. As a Reikai Tantei, he will protect Ningenkai (Human World) from harmful youkai(s) (beasts), undergo tough training, and go to strange missions for the sake of Reikai itself. His first mission was to bring back the three stolen treasures of Reikai. One week after his mission was assigned to him, Yusuke extinguished the first thief and befriended the two others. The treasures were also safe, and together, he, Kuwabara (who later became his friend) and the two thieves who were close friends, Hiei and Kurama or Shuuichi Minamino worked on other missions.

Part Three:
   Genkai's Tournament

The last fight had gotten Yusuke tired and winded up. All he wanted for now was to  relax and have a great time with a game he was hoping to see. But during one of his sessions of cutting classes, Botan showed up. She wanted Yusuke to go to Genkai's Tournament, held at her temple. The winner will inherit her Spirit Waves (not caring if it'll be used for good or evil intentions) and Koenma is certainly worried about that. He wanted his very own Reikai tantei to win or at least ensure that Benjo, a  youkai wanted in Reikai for several disturbing activities, will not take away Genkai's ki.
Genkai had strange activities ready for everyone. During the gathering of participants, Yusuke met up with Kuwabara. They weren't close friends yet so he felt a little apprehensive upon meeting him there. While measuring their capabilities, Genkai was sizing up the best persons to inherit her ki. Throughout the activities, Yusuke remained vigilant for the ones with unusually strong ki despite his rowdy exterior. After the elimination round, six remained and among them were Yusuke, Kuwabara and a fellow who suspiciously passed Genkai's tough tests even though he was ultimately weak. Finally, he revealed his true form during his fight with Kuwabara. Since he lost, Yusuke had to take over.
Because of pure luck, Yusuke defeats Randou (Shourin) and has done his job for Reikai.
By the way, because of being Genkai's successor, he never got the chance to use the tickets Botan promised to give him when he returns. He spent his time trainingwith Genkai on her temple and mastering techniques he never realized were real.

Part Four: 
   The four beasts

After a few days of peace, enough time for his aching muscles to heal, Botan, the Reikai ferry girl, appeared on their school (Sara Yashiki High) to assign him another mission. This mission was for him to go to the land where four beasts rule. These four have sent mosquito-like insects that will prick the skin of the person with evil intentions and influence them in doing evil. These creatures will attack just about anybody their eyes laid on. Yusuke has to destroy the whistle that controls the insects. Along with Kuwabara, they met up with Hiei and Kurama in the world of the beasts. Inside the castle, they were trapped in a room whose ceiling moves downwards until it crushes them. The wall is sensitive and can sense when one has left the group by their missing ki. Yusuke and the others encouraged Hiei, a youkai and the fastest among them, to push the lever up and stop the wall. Suceeding on this feat, they proceeded and met the first beast named as Genbou. After Kurama finished him, they met up with Byako, which Kuwabara took care of and Seiruu, who was slashed 16 times with Hiei's sword. At last, Yusuke met up with the last beast, Suzaku, who used Keiko and Botan to weaken his will. Yusuke got shaken up with this, but regained enough composure to defeat his powerful enemy. This got him so tired, he was asleep for three days back at Ningenkai.

Part Five: 
   Rescuing Yukina

Yusuke's next mission was handed to him by Hiei, not Botan. Koenma decided to ask Hiei to deliver a video tape containing his mission to Yusuke for he is involved with the mission personally. Apparently, Yukina, Hiei's Koorime sister (ice maiden) was asked to be kidnapped by a merchant named Tarukane, who's from an elite group of corrupt businessmen, to create pearls using her tears. Yusuke has to lead her away from Tarukane. Along with Kuwabara and Botan, they headed to the mountains were Yukina was held and posed as tourists. They passed some youkai and met three of Tarukane's body guards: Miyuki, Inmaki and Gokumonki. After beating them, they met Tarukane's real body guards: Toguro Ototo and Toguro Ani. Working with Kuwabara, Yusuke was able to defeat the two and found Hiei beating up their boss who was watching nearby. His brotherly instincts took over and nearly killed Tarukane if Yukina didn't ask him to stop. They all went back to Ningenkai after Yukina proclaimed to return to her search for her brother. She had no idea that her brother was the ill-tempered youkai named Hiei.

Part Six: 
   The Ankoku Bujutsukai

Because he was threatened by Toguro Ototo, who was clearly alive, Yusuke underwent a special training with Genkai to participate in the Ankoku Bujutsukai (Black Martial Arts Tournament) and to defeat him. He also had formed the Urameshu-gumi (Urameshi team) composed of Hiei, Kurama, Kuwabara, a mysterious masked member and himself because the requirements were 5 members. They arrived at the Kubi Kukuri Hotel after their first match (sort of elimination round) at the ship that they used to get there. Yusuke was sound asleep because of the though training Genkai gave him, but was able to use his reflexes to keep himself from being harmed. The real purpose of the so-called elimination round was to test the Urameshi Team and report their progress on Sakyo, a cold-blooded businessman belonging to the club. He happens to be sponsoring the Toguro Team, which are the Urameshi Team's main competitors.
They met their opponent for the next day's match that night at their hotel room. That team is the Rokoyuukai Team with Zeru and Rinku giving them a warm welcome. The next day came in the following matches:
                     Kuwabara vs. Rinku
Rinku uses yoyos and can skillfully manipulate them to make them deadly weapons. He even raised Kuwabara up in the air, making Kuwabara's rei ken (spirit sword) look juvenile against his yoyos. Kuwabara did his best and managed to hit Rinku on this stomach, but he lost by default, not being able to stand up on the count of ten.
                     Kurama vs. Roto
Roto used trickery against Kurama's Makai plants. By planting bombs near Shiori, Kurma's mother, one wrong move from Kurama and he will set off explosives beside his mother. Knowing that he loved his mother so much that he'd do anything for her, Roto decided to use this as his advantage. But then, Kurama saw an opportunity and defeated him using his plants. After being declared as the winner, Kurama left the ring feeling disgusted.
                     Hiei vs. Zeru
The rest of the members fled in fear after seeing Hiei's Black Dragon. That's the first time he's ever used it and has gotten his right arm scorched by the flames. Zeru was burned to ashes by Hiei and left nothing but soot on the wall.
                    Yusuke vs. Chuu
Then came Chuu, a drunkard that saved Rinku once when he was endangered by some street thugs. Chuu uses a technique that involves alcohol, since its like water to him. To defeat him, Yusuke and Chuu both used the Head Butt, and since Yusuke's head was stronger than Chuu's, he won the match and Chuu was sent down on the ring.

The next team they faced was the Ichigaki Team. The three members who will fight were controlled by Dr. Ichigaki who wanted their abilities and nothing more. He gave their teacher some illness that only he could cure, and bribed them to join his team in exchange for the medicine. These three were faced by the masked member, Yusuke and Kuwabara. The masked member managed to remove the three members of the Ichigaki Team from Dr. Ichigaki's grasp. This demanded a lot of ki, but he didn't appear to mind. Before the fight, Kurama and Hiei went off to different directions with Hiei contemplating on his scorched hand and Kurama thinking of some new fighting strategy. They met up in the woods and were cornered by a robot named Gatasubaru controlled by a lizard-like fellow. This kept them occupied and by the time they reached the arena, the fight was already through. 

The next fight was for the Mashoutsukai Team. The match followed immediately after the defeat of the Ichigaki Team. The Urameshi Team had several disadvantages: they were exhausted from the first two fights; Hiei's condition hadn't improved; the masked members ki was dangerously low. Proposed by the judges, the Urameshi Team underwent a quick examination from a nurse named Rucca. Genkai and Hiei were easily trapped  inside her tent and were forced to watch the match from there. Yusuke was enraged about what happened and wanted to hurt Ruka for that, but Kurama reminded him that this will do no good. Fighting them will take a lot of good strategy. Kurama decided that he will fight first and that he will reveal whatever secrets he can to Yusuke for his later use. When he is unable to fight, Yusuke will take over. The other team agreed that whoever wins the first fight will continue to fight the next opponent until he is unable to do so. The match began.
                     Kurama vs. Keshoo Tsukai Gama 
Gama uses tattoos or makeup. His blood contains poison that will paralyze whoever it gets in contact with. Kurama, not knowing the real effects of Gama's paint, didn't elude very well as Gama streaked his blood on him. When Gama passed away, his last words were that Kurama will be paralyzed because of the poison found on his blood.
                     Kurama vs.Juhyoo Tsukai Touya
Throughout his battle with Touya, he and Kurama carried a silent conversation through their minds. Kurama learned that they wanted to experience having some light, after living in the darkness for a long time. Defeating Touya proved to be difficult because Gama still has total control over him. Kuama tried to rub off the paint with his own blood, but it didn't work, since the paint was also on his body. When Touya was moving for his last assault, the ice sword, the plants that Kurama had planted on his own open wounds grew and stabbed Touya on the chest. Since he couldn't use the plants (because of Gama), he used his body to stop him. Kurama was again the winner.
                     Kurama vs. Bakken
Even if he was so weak, the tournament proceeded. Bakken, a heavyset man with the build of a wrestler faced Kurama. But because he was so weak, Kurama lost.
                     Yusuke vs. Bakken
It was time to switch team members. Yusuke was angered at the way Bakken treated Kurama (for he was so weak, yet he still beat him up) and threw strong punches on him. Bakken even tried to cheat just to win and it angered Yusuke even more. He punched Bakken on the ribs, breaking them, and winning the match for the Urameshi Team.
                     Yusuke vs. Kaze Tsukai Jin
Jin's attitude towards fighting Yusuke  was suave, smooth and cool. Yusuke decide to use the same approach, but he was thrown a little off his charade because Jin left the ring and settle in the sky. Yusuke wasn't willing to lose easily and when Jin descended from the skies, Yusuke attacked him. The fight ended with Yusuke rightfully winning, but the judges who are clearly in favor of the Mashoutsukai Team declared the fight as a tie.
                     Kuwabara vs Rishou
Having been clobbered at the previous fight by the Ichigaki Team, Kuwabara was left to rest and treat his wounds while Yusuke and Kurama face the Mashoutsukai Team. But because Yusuke's fight with Jin resulted to a tie, Yusuke, the last player for the Urameshi Team, became ineligible to play, while the other team has Rishou as the last player. Kuwabara then decided to get up and face him even if his body is still hurting from the fight with the previous team. 
The fight was almost hopeless for Kuwabara, but at the sight of Yukina, he got a sudden rush of energy and defeated Rishou. The Urameshi Team will proceed to the Semi-finals.

After the excruciating fight with the Mashoutsukai Team, the Urameshi Team finally had the chance to rest. The next team that they faced are the Uraotogi Team and it has been decided that the participants will be chosen through the dice.
                     Hiei vs Makintarou
With Hiei against Makintarou, who was considered to be a weak member of their team, the fight ended soon, with Hiei emerging as the winner. The Uraotogi Team's recation wasn't what they expected. After seeing him being slashed into pieces, they scoffed and acted as if Makintarou isn't their member. This angered the members of the Urameshi Team.
                     Hiei vs Kuromomotarou
It was Kuromomotarou who declared Makintarou as their invaluable member. When he stepped in the ring, Hiei handed him his sword and Kuromomotarou slashed his arm (above the elbow) with it. Everybody couldn't understand why he did that, but later in the fight, Hiei's sword couldn't penetrate his skin. It turned out that when he slashed his arm, he was able to create a certain immunity towards Hiei's sword. during the fight, he also changed in different coatings (feathers, monkey hair). He was defeated when...
                     Kurama vs Uraurashima
At this fight, Kurama hardly allowed his guard down. He had a conversation through telepathy with Uraurashima and his opponent requested that they pretend to fighting and in the end he will pretend to be defeated. Kurama sensed sincerity in his voice, so he agreed. When he realized he was tricked, for Uraurashima didn't live up to his word, he began to fight aggressively. Uraurashima then pulled a spell on him. This spell, when used in real humans, will turn them into their very first state which was a baby. When it was used in Kurama, who was originally a five-tailed youko, he became that ruthless fox once again. Uraurashima is defeated by his Makai plants. Then, he returned to being Shuuichi Minamino again.
