EPISODE THREE: KUWABARA'S WORD
Koenma told Yusuke that he can still live by taking good care of an egg. This egg contains the spirit of a youkai, and if Yusuke didn't do things right, it will eat him the moment it hatches. For the meantime, he watches over Keiko, his longtime friend. He spotted Keiko on her way home, and followed her, only to find out that she was being bullied by some students from another school. Kuwabara and his friends happen to be passing by, and they fought the bullies.
The next day, a teacher from their school approached Kuwabara and his gang. Their friend was allowed by the school to have a part-time job. Their teacher said that if they could avoid getting in trouble for a week, then their friend could continue his work. If not, then their friend's family would suffer, since he only works in order to help his mother. Kuwabara said to them that he will try to stay at home for a week to avoid trouble.
On his way home, he met the other school's thugs. They wanted to have a fight with him to settle the score. They were beaten by Kuwabara and his gang yesterday, and now they seek for revenge. This seems to be a good time for Kuwabara was alone. They kicked him and hit him, yet he didn't fight back. He wasn't going to break his promise. His teacher, who was watching behind some walls, knew he had to think of another way to get Kuwabara out of their school, since Kuwabara shows no sign of fighting back.
He did come up with another plan, because the next day, he gathered Kuwabara and his friends, and told them that they'll have to pass the upcoming physics exam. It will happen 3 days from now, and if they didn't pass, then their friend wouldn't be able to work. Kuwabara declared confidently that the exam will be a piece of cake---all he had to do is study. His other friends were worried because Kuwabara only got a 7 and only one of them passed the previous exam. Yusuke, who was listening nearby, laughed at Kuwabara's score, and realized that he's smarter than his foe. He got a 12.
So Kuwabara studied. He went to the library to check out some books and even went to the bookstore, but he didn't have the chance to stay there long, because he encountered those thugs again. He got into another fistfight, but still refused to fight back.
Seeing this, Yusuke realized that he considered Kuwabara a brave enemy and the toughest competitor he had all his life. He noticed that he was serious about passing the exam, that one night, when Kuwabara fell asleep during his study session, Yusuke entered his dream, and he helped him prepare for the exam the next day.
The next morning, Kuwabara was spotted studying on his way to school by some tough students. They heard that he no longer fights back when he faces a challenge, and so, they approached him in order to find out. However, they didn't have a chance to do so because Yusuke entered the body of an unconscious student and beat the students up. Kuwabara was able to go to school, safe and unharmed, thanks to Yusuke's help.
Kuwabara finished the exam earlier than he had expected and he was able to check and recheck his paper for a couple of times. His Physics teacher saw how well he had studied, and decided to erase his answer to deliberately fail him on the test. They weren't careful, though, since a fellow teacher (the one who attended Yusuke's funeral) witnessed what they had done. Kuwabara learned that he failed the exam, and realized that his teacher framed him. He complained and was about to beat him up when he somehow sensed Yusuke, who was trying to stop him. Dejectedly, he let go off his teacher and walked away. His teacher thought they had won, but then he didn't. The other teacher, who saw their crime, told him what he saw, and so, he decided to give Kuwabara the score he deserves and allow his friend to work.
